Make restaurant-style chicken lettuce wraps at home with this easy, savory ground chicken recipe. This version tastes like the P.F. Chang’s favorite and is ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 4 ounces water chestnuts, drained and chopped
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup minced yellow onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 head butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce, leaves separated and washed
  • Optional garnish: chopped green onions, crushed peanuts

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until it is browned and cooked through. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped water chestnuts, mushrooms, onion, garlic, and ginger to the skillet with the chicken. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the vegetables soften slightly.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, brown sugar, sesame oil, and black pepper. Pour this sauce mixture over the chicken and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the water and cornstarch until smooth. Pour this slurry into the skillet and stir constantly until the sauce thickens, about 1 minute. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  5. Arrange the washed lettuce cups on a platter. Spoon the savory chicken filling into each lettuce cup.
  6. Garnish with chopped green onions or crushed peanuts, if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a low carb chicken appetizer, skip adding the brown sugar to the sauce.
  • You can substitute ground turkey for ground chicken if you prefer.
  • To make this a quick Asian chicken dinner, prepare the sauce mixture ahead of time.
