Make these cute cupcakes for Dog Mom Day using simple decorations to celebrate your pet bond.

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • Ingredients required by cake mix box (usually eggs, oil, water)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • Pink food coloring gel
  • Brown food coloring gel
  • Small round candies or chocolate chips for paw pads

Instructions

  1. Prepare the white cake mix according to the package directions, substituting the required water with whole milk for a richer flavor.
  2. Divide the batter evenly into 12 cupcake liners placed in a muffin tin.
  3. Bake the cupcakes according to the package directions for cupcakes. Let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. Prepare the buttercream frosting: Beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, alternating with the heavy cream, until smooth. Add the vanilla and almond extracts.
  5. Divide the frosting into three small bowls. Leave one bowl white. Tint one bowl light pink using the pink food coloring gel. Tint the last bowl light brown using the brown food coloring gel.
  6. Frost each cooled cupcake with a layer of white frosting.
  7. Use a small offset spatula or the back of a spoon to create a slightly domed top.
  8. Use a small piping bag fitted with a small round tip, or a plastic bag with the corner snipped off, to pipe a small circle of brown frosting in the center of the cupcake top for the main paw pad.
  9. Pipe three smaller circles of brown frosting below the main circle to form the toes.
  10. Place one small round candy or chocolate chip on each of the three toe pads and the main pad for a cute, textured look.
  11. Serve these pet celebration treats immediately or store them covered at room temperature.

Notes

  • For a spring bake idea, add a drop of lavender extract to the frosting for a subtle floral note.
  • If you do not have small round candies, you can use melted chocolate piped into small dots.
  • These cupcakes are for human consumption; do not give the actual cake or frosting to your dog.
