Make restaurant-style Bang Bang Shrimp at home. This recipe delivers crispy fried shrimp tossed in a creamy, sweet, and spicy sauce, replicating the popular Bonefish Grill appetizer. You can also use the air fryer for a lighter version.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying (or cooking spray for air fryer)
  • For the Bang Bang Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha (adjust to your heat preference)
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the shrimp: Pat the shrimp completely dry with paper towels. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg and water.
  2. Dip the shrimp first into the flour mixture, shaking off excess, then dip into the egg mixture, and finally coat again thoroughly in the flour mixture. Set aside on a plate.
  3. Make the Bang Bang Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, sriracha, honey, rice vinegar, and garlic powder until smooth. This is your homemade bang bang sauce secret.
  4. Cook the shrimp (Frying Method): Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet to reach about 1.5 inches depth. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack.
  5. Cook the shrimp (Air Fryer Method): Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated shrimp in a single layer (work in batches). Spray the tops of the shrimp lightly with cooking spray. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway, until crispy.
  6. Combine: Place the hot, crispy shrimp in a large bowl. Pour the prepared Bang Bang Sauce over the shrimp and toss gently until every piece is coated in the creamy spicy shrimp sauce.
  7. Serve immediately as a creamy spicy shrimp appetizer or use as bang bang shrimp tacos filling.

Notes

  • For an Air Fryer Bang Bang Shrimp variation, ensure the shrimp are coated evenly but not too thickly, as this helps them crisp up better in the air fryer.
  • If you want to make Bang Bang Shrimp Pasta, cook 8 ounces of linguine according to package directions. Toss the sauced shrimp with the drained pasta and a splash of reserved pasta water to create a luscious sauce coating.
  • For extra flavor in the coating, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the dry mix.
