Ingredients
Scale
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Optional: 1 clove garlic, minced
Instructions
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. If using garlic, add the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
Pour in the heavy cream and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to low.
Gradually whisk in the grated Parmesan cheese, a little at a time, until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
Season the sauce with salt and pepper. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
If the sauce is too thick, add a tablespoon of pasta water or milk until you reach your desired consistency.
Toss immediately with your favorite cooked pasta, like fettuccine, or use as a topping.
Notes
For the best texture, use freshly grated Parmesan cheese; pre-shredded cheese may cause the sauce to become grainy.
If you need a slightly thicker sauce, simmer for an extra minute or two after adding the cheese.
This recipe makes a classic, rich sauce. If you prefer a variation, you can substitute 2 ounces of cream cheese with a portion of the heavy cream.
