Make the best creamy onion dip by slowly caramelizing onions for deep, savory flavor. This recipe is a superior alternative to mix-based dips and perfect for any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, for 30 to 40 minutes until they are deeply browned and caramelized. This slow cooking builds the rich flavor.
  3. Stir in the sugar, salt, and pepper during the last 5 minutes of caramelization. Remove the onions from the heat and let them cool completely.
  4. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  5. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder to the cream cheese. Mix until just combined.
  6. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture.
  7. Cover the dip and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving. This allows the flavors to fully meld.
  8. Serve your homemade chip dip with potato chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For the creamiest texture, ensure your cream cheese is fully softened before mixing.
  • If you need a quicker version, you can use 1 tablespoon of dried onion soup mix instead of caramelizing fresh onions, but the flavor will be less deep.
  • This dip tastes best when made a day ahead, allowing the caramelized onion flavor to infuse the base.
