Make this addictive sweet and salty treat using only a few ingredients. This recipe delivers a satisfying crunch with buttery toffee and a rich chocolate topping, requiring no candy thermometer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: Coarse sea salt, crushed peppermint, or chopped nuts for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire surface.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture boils. Let it boil for exactly one minute without stirring further.
  3. Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading quickly to cover them completely.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should look bubbly.
  5. Remove the pan from the oven. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to soften.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate across the crackers using an offset spatula. If using toppings like sea salt or peppermint, sprinkle them over the chocolate now.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  8. Once set, break the toffee into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • For a variation, sprinkle flaky sea salt over the melted chocolate before chilling. This enhances the sweet and salty balance.
  • To make Peppermint Saltine Toffee, sprinkle crushed candy canes over the chocolate layer immediately after spreading it.
  • If you prefer a different chocolate, substitute milk or dark chocolate chips for the semi-sweet.
  • This recipe is perfect for beginner candy making recipes.
