A straightforward recipe for assembling a popular Tex-Mex layered dip perfect for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (16 ounce) can refried beans, room temperature
  • 1 cup guacamole
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon taco seasoning mix
  • 1 cup salsa, drained well
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
  • 1 medium tomato, seeded and diced
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives, drained

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix the sour cream and taco seasoning until combined. Set aside.
  2. Select a clear, shallow serving dish, about 8×8 inches or similar size, to show the layers.
  3. Spread the refried beans evenly over the bottom of the dish. This is your first layer.
  4. Carefully spread the guacamole over the beans.
  5. Spread the seasoned sour cream mixture evenly over the guacamole layer.
  6. Spoon the drained salsa over the sour cream layer.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the salsa.
  8. Top with the diced tomato.
  9. Scatter the sliced black olives over the top layer.
  10. Cover the dish and chill for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the layers to set. Serve with tortilla chips.

Notes

  • Use room temperature refried beans so they spread smoothly without tearing the layer beneath.
  • Drain the salsa thoroughly to prevent the dip from becoming watery.
  • If you are preparing this dip several hours ahead, you can add a thin layer of plastic wrap directly onto the guacamole layer before adding the sour cream to help prevent browning.
