Make this easy, hearty meal by serving savory, cheesy sloppy joe filling on thick, buttery, slightly crisp Texas toast. This is a perfect comfort food dinner or game day sandwich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 8 slices Texas Toast (frozen or fresh)
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese or American cheese
  • Butter or mayonnaise for toasting bread

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and chili powder to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to blend.
  6. While the meat simmers, prepare the Texas toast. Spread a thin layer of butter or mayonnaise on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  7. Heat a large griddle or clean skillet over medium heat. Place the toast, buttered-side down, on the griddle. Toast until golden brown and crisp, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  8. Place one slice of cheese on top of four of the toasted slices. Cover the skillet briefly to allow the cheese to melt slightly.
  9. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture onto the four slices of toast topped with cheese. Top with the remaining four slices of toast.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For an extra savory flavor, use garlic butter on the Texas toast instead of plain butter or mayonnaise.
  • If you like a little heat, add 1/4 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes with the other seasonings.
  • This recipe works well for parties; keep the filling warm in a slow cooker and let guests assemble their own Texas Toast Sandwiches.
